How to Pack Dishes for Moving Without a Single Crack
February 13, 2026

Why Most Dishes Break During a Move
It's never the drive that gets them. Nine times out of ten, dishes crack because of how they were packed, not how they were transported. Stacking plates flat, using newspaper that transfers ink, or cramming too many into one box are the usual suspects.
The good news? With the right technique, you can pack an entire kitchen's worth of fragile items in under an hour. Young Buck Movers handles this kind of thing daily across the Austin area, and we've picked up a few tricks worth sharing.
Gather Your Packing Supplies First
Before you touch a single plate, get everything together. Running back and forth to grab tape wastes time and breaks your rhythm.
Here's what you need:
- Packing paper (not newspaper. The ink transfers onto white dishes)
- Medium-sized boxes (heavy-duty if you have them)
- Bubble wrap for the really fragile stuff
- Packing tape - don't skimp on this
- A marker for labeling
Dish-specific boxes with cardboard dividers are ideal for glasses and stemware. You can usually find them at Home Depot or Lowe's in the Austin area for a few bucks each.
A Note on Box Size
Small to medium boxes only. A large box full of dishes will weigh 50+ pounds and become a nightmare to lift, and more likely to get dropped. If the box feels heavy to pick up, it's too heavy.
How to Pack Plates and Bowls
Plates are tougher than people think, but only when packed correctly.
- Lay a thick cushion of crumpled packing paper at the bottom of the box (at least 3 inches)
- Wrap each plate individually, lay it in the center of a sheet of paper, fold the sides over, then tuck the corners
- Stack plates vertically on their edges like records in a crate, not flat on top of each other
- Slide crumpled paper between each plate for extra cushioning
- Fill every gap with paper so nothing shifts during the drive
Bowls follow the same method. Wrap individually, nestle them inside each other in groups of two or three, then place upright in the box.
Glasses and Stemware Need Extra Attention
Wineglasses and thin-walled drinking glasses are the most breakable items in your kitchen. They need individual wrapping and structural support.
- Stuff a ball of packing paper inside each glass first, this reinforces the walls from the inside
- Wrap the entire glass in packing paper, twisting the excess at the top
- For stemware, wrap the stem separately with an extra layer of bubble wrap
- Place glasses upright in a dish box with dividers if you have one
- If no dividers, create a grid with strips of cardboard cut from spare boxes
The Shake Test
Once a box is packed, give it a gentle shake. If you hear anything shifting or clinking, add more paper. Silence means safety.
Handling Ceramic and Porcelain Pieces
Mugs, serving platters, and ceramic vases each have their own quirks.
Mugs are deceptively fragile at the handle. Wrap the handle separately first, then wrap the entire mug. Place them upside down in the box.
Serving platters should be wrapped in multiple layers of packing paper and stood on edge between two cushioned items. Never lay a platter flat at the bottom of a box with other items on top.
Vases get stuffed with paper on the inside, wrapped in bubble wrap, and placed in their own small box or snugly in the center of a larger one surrounded by soft items like dish towels.
Common Mistakes That Lead to Breakage
Even careful packers make these errors:
- Overpacking boxes - leaving no room for cushioning on top
- Using old or weak boxes - a box that's been sitting in the garage for two years will collapse under weight
- Skipping the bottom cushion - the base of the box needs as much padding as the sides
- Labeling "fragile" but not "this side up" - movers need to know which direction matters
Mark every dish box with FRAGILE and an arrow pointing up. It takes three seconds and saves real headaches.
When Packing Yourself Isn't Worth the Hassle
Packing a full kitchen takes most people three to four hours if they're doing it right. If you've got the time and patience, the tips above will keep your dishes safe.
